She was saying he loved his job and especially had a great boss. She told me some of the things this boss had said and done. Clearly, this boss was a good leader. I want to share with you what I shared with my friend simply to give you something to think about in your own career. For as long as I have paid attention to this statistic (which is close to over 20 years) the number 1 contributor to a person’s job satisfaction is: The Boss. I think most people think it’s the money but money, strangely enough, shows up in #3 or #4 spot but the boss has been at the top spot all the time. If you think about it, it becomes easy to see. At some point, it almost makes no difference how much you get paid, if the boss is a miserable person, the money can’t make you happy. I think this factoid is important to you for 2 reasons: #1 â€" If you lead others, YOU are responsible for whether or not those people will like coming in to work. That alone should cause you to pay attention and try to be a good leader. Things like motivation and productivity are directly tied to this condition. Even if you want to feel no responsibility for how others feel, you need to pay attention to the fact that your team will perform better if they can work well with you. You will look much better to the executives if your team works great â€" isn’t that worth it? #2 â€" If you don’t like going to work, it’s the boss. While you know I’m a big advocate of taking responsibility for working well with the boss (and you are), you also must recognize the reality of the situation. You can’t change another person, nor can you expect for them to wake up and be different. Unless you think the boss is going to quickly move on from the current job, things aren’t going to improve anytime soon. Do you want to live like this? It’s a tough job being the boss. I know, I’ve done it for years. It’s also the best job if done right but it’s seriously easy to do wrong. That’s why there are so many books and classes devoted to leadership and management training. Moral of the story: If you are leading people or plan to lead people, pay attention to how you interact and lead â€" it will pay huge dividends. If you can’t tell a potential new employer what makes you different (read: better) than the other 118 candidates, how will they ever know? This is actually harder than it sounds. When I first started working, I landed a huge deal. I was at a solar energy installer in Kathmandu back in 2004, and the market was hot. In fact, I remember the customers paid in cash. I couldn’t keep all the bundles of paper money in the small bag I had taken with me to the appointment, so it was spilling out all over the place. When I dumped the pile of cash on the controller’s desk, he kind of stared at it, grabbed a few fistfuls of cash, and handed it to me, saying, “Here’s your commission.” That was the last I ever spoke of it. Until one day when my boss called me into his office. I thought I was in trouble, but to my surprise, he looked at me and said, “You’re really good at this! Nice work.” “Thanks!” I said, beaming a bit too early. “So, why haven’t you told anyone else in the office?” he said. “How are they ever going to know you? How are you ever going to get ahead if you keep hiding under your desk? You’ve got to figure out how to ring your own bell to get ahead in this world.” A hard lesson to learn. And when I see people do this well, I admire them. Why Is It Hard to Talk About Yourself? We’re trained from an early age not to brag. Should we do so, either our parents will scold us or we’ll alienate our peer group? So we retreat in the other direction: false humility. When you receive a compliment, do you simply say, “thank you”? Or do you go out of your way to discredit what nice things that person has said about you? The problem is that if you can’t talk about yourself and your accomplishments, your future employer will have no idea! You’re making their job harder by not sharing this information. How to Strike the Right Balance Between Facts and Bragging I can sit in front of you and tell you I’ve written a bestselling book without bragging. I’m simply stating a fact: Job Searching with Social Media For Dummies sold over 10,000 copies, thus making it into the bestselling category. Then I will you that selling so many copies was a lot of hard work. Writing the book was a long, intense process that took over my entire life. I wasn’t born into it, I earned it. Still not bragging. But if I said, “I’m a bestselling author, whose book sold over 10,000 copies easily.” That could be bragging. Here’s why: First, It’s Not About Who You Are; It’s About What You Did When you talk about your accomplishments, learn to distinguish between something inherent to you (like intelligence, luck or good looks) and something you did (like hard work, perseverance and innovation). There’s a big difference between “I’m a bestselling author” and “I’ve written a book that’s bestselling.” Second, Show Your Struggle and Be Human Bragging has a sense of, “I’m better than you. Things you think are hard are easy for me.” You can quickly eliminate that pretense by sharing your struggle. It wasn’t my brilliant writing and perfect timing that sold 10,000 copies (although I’d like to believe that). These are smallest units of meaning within the Cantonese characters â€" which are the components for the full character its elf.There are 214 of these radicals which contribute to the rest of the fifty thousand characters. Without this knowledge, you’re not going anywhere particularly helpful.Stroke Order.In conversations about writing Cantonese, there is a lot of talk about stroke order. Here’s Some Tips and Tricks.When it comes to learning the different characters, there is quite a lot to think about: pronunciation, shape and size, memorizing it, etc etc.Yet, there are a couple of ways to ensure that all of this goes into your head nice and smoothly.Radicals Rather than Strokes.The first is to recognise and memorise the characters by reference to the radicals rather than the individual strokes that make up the whole.This is helpful for a number of reasons. Firstly, the radical you’ll see again in many other characters. Secondly, you can link the learning of the pronunciation and meaning directly with the radical â€" which you can’t do with the stroke.And, finally, the radical is a unit of meaning that is a whole. As such, it is just easier to remember.Spaced Repetition.When you are memorising your characters by rote, forget about the brute repetition of again and again and again.Inste ad, use the more sophisticated repetition method known as spaced repetition. You have to sit and think about each and every word or achievement. You have to figure out what the hiring manager wants to hear. You have to take the time to review each and every line in order to make sure it presents yourself in the best light possible. By the time you send in the resume, you will likely have spent hours writing, researching, and analyzing each and every detail. So it may be a bit disheartening to learn that, even after all that time spent crafting the best resume you can possibly make, most hiring managers will never see it. Thousands of Resumes, So Little Time These days, employers are frequently overwhelmed with job applications. The internet has made applying for jobs so easy, that a job opening in a big city can receive as many as 1,000 applications or more within 24 hours, and the average job in almost any city receives at least 118 resumes by the time the job is closed. For the average hiring manager â€" many of whom have other tasks to perform â€" that number is absurd. So to make life easier, many use an applicant tracking system, or “ATS.” What is An Applicant Tracking System? An ATS is a database of resumes. As soon as a resume is received, someone cuts and pastes the details of the resume into a form, which adds it to the database. When an employer is ready to start hiring people, they’ll search that database for a key term, and the database will filter through all of the applications and bring up the resumes that have that term in it. Some applicant tracking systems using an automated scoring mechanism, but the process is largely the same. For the company, there are many different benefits for using this type of system: It makes reviewing resumes much faster. It allows you to keep a database of applicants for future jobs. It is less likely to introduce biases. But for the applicant, it can also be problematic. You can create an amazing resume that meets all of the required criteria, but if you are missing just one key detail or keyword, your resume may not ever see the hiring manager’s eyes. How to Beat the ATS The idea that you may spend so much time on a resume only to have it ignored may be disheartening. Luckily, there ways that you can ensure that you show up for any searches, and tricks that you can use to make sure you put yourself in the best position to get a call. These include: Use Every Key Term in a Job Posting â€" Many of the key terms will already be in the job posting. For example, if the company wants someone with “Salesforce CRM Experience” then you should make sure that “Salesforce CRM” is in your resume. Review Competitor Job Ads â€" Do your research as well. Find out what other job descriptions from competitors and those in other states ask for. Not every company puts every qualification on their job advertisements. But if you look at what other job ads for other companies list, you can often find additional information that should be placed on your resume. Use Both Acronyms and Full Titles â€" Always remember that the people that search these databases are human beings. They may search for an acronym, like “ATS” or “CRM” or “BYOB,” or they may search for the full phrase, like “applicant tracking system.” Since you don’t know what they’re searching for, it helps to have both versions in the resume. Use a Professional Summary â€" You have limited space to put information that helps in an applicant tracking system. Skip the space clogging “objective statement” and instead use a professional summary â€" a 5 to 6 sentence paragraph where you can highlight some of your best features, and plug in valuable key terms. Add Numbers â€" Automated ATS can read numbers to determine important information, such as the number of years worked for a company. Make sure you’re using the numerical version of numbers, rather than the typed out version of the number (ie, 5 vs five). Keep it Simple â€" The average ATS is designed to look for specific information. For example, a “Work Experience” section with the job title above each bulleted list. If you do anything fancy, such as changing the title of the Work Experience section to something unique, like “Sarah’s Job History,” or if you add special formatting that isn’t normal for resumes, you may confuse the applicant tracking system and have your resume discarded. Tweak Often â€" Finally, don’t be afraid to make little changes. Consider different keywords and phrases that may be important. Use synonyms whenever possible. Alter your job title to be more in line with what the title would be at the job. Avoid any filler text and unnecessary information. Tweaking often can make sure that even if one ATS doesn’t like your resume, others will. Technology may have made applying for jobs easier, but it also means that job seekers need to take the time to perfect their resume for the positions to which they’re applying. Often that means making sure that your resume is ATS ready. Consider the above tips and strategies to maximize your chance at landing the job, and remember that the time you spend to build the perfect resume is always worth it. What You Need to Know About the New AP Calculus Exams In the 2016-2017 school year, high school students sitting for the AP Calculus ABand BC examswill be facing a slightly different exam than those who tested before them. It is important for students to be aware of these changes so they can properly prepare for the new test format. Below are some things you need to know about the new AP Calculus exam if youll be taking it starting in the 2016-2017 school year. New topics The new AP Calculus exams will assess students in two new areas: LHospitals Rule will be added to the Calculus AB test, while the Calculus BC testwill see additions related to the limit comparison test, absolute and conditional convergence, and the alternating series error bound. Despite these additions to the test, there will be no content removed. The introduction of new topics ensures that the AP Calculus exams align with college-level coursework so that students may continue to earn equivalent college credit upon college entrance. Exam structure Although the basic format of these tests will remain the same, the internal structure will change a bit. The exams will still consist of a Multiple Choice and Free Response section, each worth 50% of the total exam score and both containing a part A and B. Part A of the Multiple Choice section will consist of 30 questions timed at 60 minutes, while Part B will contain 15 questions with 45 minutes allotted. In the Free Response portion of the test, Part A will ask two questions and Part B will ask four, allowing 30 and 60 minutes respectively to complete each section. Practice testscan be of great help once you familiarize yourself with the new structure. Curriculum framework This change will be most noticeable to AP Calculus instructors and tutors. Rather than using traditional topic outlines, the curriculum framework will utilize six Mathematical Practices for AP Calculus, also referred to as MPACs. MPACs set up students and teachers for AP Calculus success. Every math concept taught in the course can be traced back to one of the MPACs. The MPACs for the 2016-2017 school year are as follows: reasoning with definitions and theorems, connecting concepts, implementing algebraic/computational processes, connecting multiple representations, building notational fluency, and communicating. For in-depth descriptions of these practices, you can review more details online. In addition, the AP Calculus exams will use concept outlines. These concepts include limits, derivatives, integrals and the fundamental theorem of calculus, and series (for the BC test only). Within each of these mathematical concept areas, the curriculum framework specifies what students shoul d understand, be able to do, and know related to the concepts. This provides teachers very clear objectives to ensure their AP Calculus students are appropriately prepared for the AP exams. If you are a student entering an AP Calculus course for the first time, these changes will likely not affect you too much, except for needing to master a couple of new topics. However, your AP teacher will be adequately prepared to teach you this material and ensure your understanding of it.
